But they are one of many important elements, and shouldn\u2019t be conducted in a vacuum. (It&#8217;s tempting to add some ceremonies to a waterfall project and call it &#8220;agile&#8221;, but this will get you nowhere.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Let&#8217;s take a look at each of the agile ceremonies, and understand how they empower the team and drive agile development.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Note: A number of these ceremonies come from the practice of scrum which is an iterative, time-boxed approach to implementing agile. The concepts behind these ceremonies can be applied to other forms of agile like kanban or lean. &#8220;Sprint&#8221; is a scrum-specific term. Other forms of agile use the more generic term &#8220;iteration&#8221; to indicate a time-boxed period of development.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s one definition.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\n<strong>I find the use of the term offensive.<\/strong>\u00a0 Can I be offended? \u00a0Yes.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Time and time again Louis CK is pointing out that we overuse terms.<\/li>\n<li>Scotch tape on the end of your shoelaces? \u00a0YOU&#8217;RE A FREAKIN&#8217; GENIUS!<\/li>\n<li>You wrote a unit test for a null condition? THAT&#8217;S A PHD LEVEL TOUGHT!<\/li>\n<li>The PM didn&#8217;t know what regression was? WORTHLESS! PUT THEM IN A GULAG!<\/li>\n<li>JAVA IS EVIL!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Language does not have to be like this.<\/p>\n<p>So here is little ol&#8217; humble Agile and some d-bags keep adding complexity and stupidness; yes &#8216;ceremony&#8217; has been around for a while and I&#8217;d hope it&#8217;d go away. \u00a0Nope.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the dictionary definition:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>cer\u00b7e\u00b7mo\u00b7ny<\/em><br \/>\n<em> \u02c8ser\u0259\u02ccm\u014dn\u0113<\/em><br \/>\n<em> noun<\/em><br \/>\n<em> 1.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> a formal religious or public occasion, typically one celebrating a particular event or anniversary.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> &#8220;the winners were presented with their prizes at a special ceremony&#8221;<\/em><br \/>\n<em> 2.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> the ritual observances and procedures performed at grand and formal occasions.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> &#8220;the new Queen was proclaimed with due ceremony&#8221;<\/em><br \/>\n<em> synonyms:pomp, protocol, formalities, niceties, decorum, etiquette, punctilio, politesse<\/em><br \/>\n<em> &#8220;the new queen was proclaimed with due ceremony&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>So seriously, an agile meeting is equivalent to\u00a0weddings, graduations, funerals, and dead soldiers?<\/p>\n<p>The language\u00a0places importance on <strong>PROCESS OVER THE PEOPLE<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0&#8212; and the use of that word is more management-speak than useful.<\/p>\n<p>Please excuse me now.
