{"id":256,"date":"2011-01-29T17:52:39","date_gmt":"2011-01-30T00:52:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/10kdev.ivystreetinc.com\/?p=256"},"modified":"2011-01-29T17:52:39","modified_gmt":"2011-01-30T00:52:39","slug":"mappletosh-locking-out-more-custom-customers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/10kdev.net\/?p=256","title":{"rendered":"Mappletosh locking out more Custom Customers?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I just got a new HP notebook at work (its running XP).\u00a0\u00a0 No kidding.\u00a0 Anyway, during the interchange-with-desktop services guy time, he glanced at my MacBook and then\u00a0 he told me something quite interesting:<\/p>\n<p><em>Apparently, Apple is putting special screws into all the external cases etc. to which only THEY have a screwdriver for.\u00a0 And, if you bring in a legacy notebook, like my older un-warrantied MacBook\u00a0 they will take the liberty of putting in these screws for you.\u00a0\u00a0 Customers, then, very plainly, cannot work on or upgrade their machines.\u00a0 They will have to take them into the Apple Temple at their local mall to get them worked on.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Wow.\u00a0\u00a0 Wow wow wow.\u00a0 No home-memory upgrades.\u00a0 No home hard drive swaps.\u00a0 If your keyboard gets hosed up &#8212; no buying one off the internet and putting it in yourself.\u00a0 Nope.<\/p>\n<p>And it&#8217;s all part of the Apple Experience!<\/p>\n<p>Well, the Apple experience is starting to suck.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t understand why the Applites all defend a huge, bigger than Microsoft company so much when they do things like this.\u00a0\u00a0 Or when they do things like not allow flash on iPhones.\u00a0 All that.\u00a0\u00a0 Why the blind loyalty?<\/p>\n<p>Being a developer, and a power user (I guess) here&#8217;s how my life works:\u00a0 <strong>I<\/strong> want to choose what applications <strong>I<\/strong> want to use.\u00a0 <strong>I<\/strong> want to choose my own experience.\u00a0 When I get a computer I am not buying a speak and spell, all glued together and does one thing.\u00a0 But that&#8217;s where Apple is going with it all.<\/p>\n<p>People probably think &#8220;why so down on Macs?&#8221;\u00a0 I&#8217;m not but, they keep doing stupid things.\u00a0\u00a0 Listen, Mac doesn&#8217;t make the best development IDE someone else does, so why lock it out?\u00a0 Best desktop wiki &#8212; a company that makes Wiki&#8217;s, not Mac.\u00a0 Best music production software?\u00a0\u00a0 Best browser?\u00a0 Best multimedia center (even Windows Media center is better than iTunes)?\u00a0\u00a0 Not Mac.\u00a0 Not Windows.<\/p>\n<p>Linux figured out &#8212; we can just provide a solid hardware interface (called the OS) for the applications you want to run for you OWN experience.\u00a0 Why is it then, Mac can&#8217;t learn what Microsoft and Linux has learned?\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know.<\/p>\n<p>But the funny part is that you get Parallels and\u00a0 VMWare Fusion for cheap prices, and VirtualBox for nuthin&#8217;
