{"id":408,"date":"2011-08-16T05:03:01","date_gmt":"2011-08-16T12:03:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/10kdev.ivystreetinc.com\/?p=408"},"modified":"2011-08-16T05:05:28","modified_gmt":"2011-08-16T12:05:28","slug":"the-modern-developer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/10kdev.net\/?p=408","title":{"rendered":"The Modern Developer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Having been in a lot of modern shops and talking\/interviewing some olde skool java developers I realized there are some tools that are advantageous to being a modern developer and being more productive.\u00a0 Here they are:<\/p>\n<h3>1.\u00a0 Own your OWN notebook development computer<\/h3>\n<p>You need to own your own because it allows you to spike code and try things out and most importantly the ability to KEEP WORKING even if your work computer is out for the count.<\/p>\n<p>Own your own tools.\u00a0 Auto mechanics do.\u00a0 Doctors do.\u00a0 Artists do.\u00a0 You should too.<\/p>\n<h3>2.\u00a0 Be Portable<\/h3>\n<p>Owning a notebook is a good start; better yet having a work-issued notebook.\u00a0\u00a0 You won&#8217;t be tied to your cube and you can do presentations and collaborate.<\/p>\n<p>But don&#8217;t just stop there.\u00a0\u00a0 Reduce the amount of &#8220;work stuff&#8221; you need so it can all be carried in a single bag.\u00a0 Practice working in other spots besides your cube, or work next to colleagues trying to establish patterns of productivity.\u00a0 Sometimes a good set of headphones helps; but the big hump is gettng over that behavioral cube-pattern.<\/p>\n<h3>3.\u00a0 Learn to Use your trackpad<\/h3>\n<p>I know a lot of people like to use full sized keyboards\/mice but in fact, learning to use a trackpad allows you to be even more portable, light, and also learn gestures which are far more powerful than using a mouse.<\/p>\n<h3>4.
