{"id":688,"date":"2013-06-22T14:49:14","date_gmt":"2013-06-22T21:49:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/10kdev.ivystreetinc.com\/?p=688"},"modified":"2013-08-29T06:55:53","modified_gmt":"2013-08-29T13:55:53","slug":"crazyopolis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/10kdev.net\/?p=688","title":{"rendered":"Crazyopolis"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_689\" style=\"width: 548px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/10kdev.net\/688\/crazyopolis\/hannibal\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-689\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-689\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-689   \" alt=\"hannibal\" src=\"http:\/\/10kdev.ivystreetinc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/hannibal.jpg\" width=\"538\" height=\"256\" srcset=\"http:\/\/10kdev.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/hannibal.jpg 640w, http:\/\/10kdev.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/hannibal-300x142.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 538px) 100vw, 538px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-689\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Welcome to my project.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>&#8220;The Leadership Team&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sometimes history repeats itself so badly you just can&#8217;t believe it.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I was put on a project team where the manager was considered an &#8220;outlaw&#8221; and &#8220;highly productive.&#8221; \u00a0I thought, well, cool. \u00a0But after a month I knew what was up, the company had themselves a bonafide, true blue death march commandant.<\/p>\n<p>The first indications started to seep in with who the manager appointed as his team leads; they were people who would basically schedule late Friday afternoon meetings on short notice. \u00a0With little technical skill they&#8217;d head up &#8220;code reviews&#8221; and basically they&#8217;d be on a meta-level of discussing &#8220;I told you mobile was the future!!!!&#8221; One *leader* listed herself as a scrum leader but was never at the meetings unless upper management showed up, and dyed her hair more times than Lady Gaga during performance sets. \u00a0It was, in short, humorous for me and quite interesting. \u00a0And still history repeats itself!<\/p>\n<p>Since I chose this career, there&#8217;s not really a whole lot a team can throw at me that will make me balk. \u00a0What kills me though, is the willingness of a company to be non-productive and waste time.<\/p>\n<p>During the course of a rollout we followed a classic 1990&#8217;s schedule:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Postpone the rollout three times over the course of two months.<\/li>\n<li>Expand scope to extend work into weekends and evenings.<\/li>\n<li>Ignore questions about the actual mechanics of the rollout. \u00a0After three postponements they still didn&#8217;t have a useful rollout script.<\/li>\n<li>The day before the actual rollout (finally!) tell everyone they have to be online to test at 11pm &#8211; even though the week before the senior developers had asked and tehy were told this wouldn&#8217;t happen.<\/li>\n<li>The day OF the rollout tell everyone they have to be onsite at 11 pm, even though the senior developers asked the week before and told this wouldn&#8217;t happen AND its the fishing opener in that state which was quite, quite important for much of the team who already had plans due to misinformation.<\/li>\n<li>The night of the rollout, don&#8217;t have the rollout shit together so everyone is sitting around for 4-5 hours before they can test.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The reason I am writing this, is to log this bit of project history. \u00a0I don&#8217;t mind pulling planned all nighters. \u00a0 I don&#8217;t mind \u00a0curve balls. \u00a0 \u00a0But the more I do this job, over more than 20 years, the less that I believe there is any management progress at all.<\/p>\n<p>I scratch my head thinking about this. \u00a0Why not? \u00a0What is it that has happened that we still get this type of destructive behavior? \u00a0In this case our software was not mission critical. \u00a0I&#8217;ve come up with a few answers:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The Agile movement was doomed to fail because of the hierarchical nature of business. \u00a0It can&#8217;t be helped. \u00a0Flat work environemtns don&#8217;t translate into raises and performance reviews. \u00a0Teams aren&#8217;t promoted, individuals are.<\/li>\n<li>Human nature doesn&#8217;t change. \u00a0People motivated to be on *leadership teams* act for themselves 80% of the time. \u00a0This doesn&#8217;t help the team members.<\/li>\n<li>Humans just aren&#8217;t any good at schedules, most of us are too perfectionistic.<\/li>\n<li>Many of us just like frantic out of controllness. \u00a0Being on a &#8220;high energy team&#8221; makes a lot of people feel valuable; having hero complex makes many people feel valuable.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>I just kinda wonder if manufacturing operates like this constantly, or is there anyplace that is productive and laid back. \u00a0I guess I am. \u00a0\ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;The Leadership Team&#8221; Sometimes history repeats itself so badly you just can&#8217;t believe it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[17],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"http:\/\/10kdev.net\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/688"}],"collection":[{"href":"http:\/\/10kdev.net\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"http:\/\/10kdev.net\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/10kdev.net\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/10kdev.net\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=688"}],"version-history":[{"count":12,"href":"http:\/\/10kdev.net\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/688\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":766,"href":"http:\/\/10kdev.net\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/688\/revisions\/766"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"http:\/\/10kdev.net\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=688"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/10kdev.net\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=688"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/10kdev.net\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=688"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
